The FAI have announced a new 'cross-border competition' which will see the winners of the League of Ireland Premier Division take on the Champions of the Danske Bank Northern Irish Premiership.
The new League of Ireland season gets underway this Friday with representatives from each club in attendance at the 2019 SSE Airtricity League season launch at the Aviva Stadium this morning.
At the launch, FAI Director of Competitions Fran Gavin announced the creation of a new competition which will take place at the end of the 2019 season.
The competition will see this season's champions go head-to-head against their Northern Irish counterparts in a two-legged final.
The second leg of the tie will be televised live by RTÉ, with further details to be announced in the near future, Gavin added.

The 2019 League of Ireland season concludes in October, with reigning champions Dundalk favourites to retain the title.
The season kicks off on Friday (February 15) with the Lilywhites set to entertain Liam Buckley's new-look Sligo Rovers live on RTE2.
RTE's coverage of the league will be significantly enhanced in the 2019 season thanks to their new match-night highlights from every Premier Division match with eirSport set to announce their live match package on Wedensday.
Linfield currently sit top of the Danske Bank Irish Premiership table, six points ahead of Ballymena United, with the season set to draw to a close in May.
